Fundamentals of Neuromodulation

Faculty Peter G. Pryzbylkowski, MD

UAN 0530-0000-21-146-L04-P
Rx hours 0.0

Neuromodulation, including neurostimulation and intraspinal analgesic therapies, is commonly utilized in pain management. Most patients who have spinal cord stimulators (SCS) implanted for chronic pain have long standing and complex pain concerns. In addition to the index pain being targeted for SCS, often there are psychological comorbidities, physical deconditioning, ongoing opioid pain medication use, and secondary pain problems. In order to truly optimize the desired outcomes for these patients, each of these areas need to be addressed. This session will focus on the latest medical, behavioral, and regenerative medicine approaches to help optimize neuromodulation outcomes and explore patient identification strategies to optimize treatment outcomes when considering such approaches.

Lesser of Three Evils? Untangling Somatic and Neurologic from Visceral Pain

Faculty Jorge F. Carrillo, MD, FACOG

UAN 0530-0000-21-309-L08-P
Rx hours 0.0

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) affects nearly 26% of the world’s population and often co-occurs with other debilitating conditions. These coexisting conditions, often termed chronic overlapping pain conditions, are more prevalent in women and include, but are not limited to, vulvodynia, endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome, temporomandibular disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic tension-type and migraine headache, and chronic low back pain. Many of these lead to CPP and affect visceral structures; however, other frequent and important types of pain are somatic and neurologic in origin. When initially evaluating a patient suffering from CPP, it is imperative to perform a detailed and structured history and physical exam to promptly identify and initiate treatment for all the potential conditions leading to pain. This is also important since it will lead to creating an individualized team to treat the patient’s conditions and needs in an interdisciplinary fashion. This presentation will identify the best tools to collect, organize, and review a patient’s history and physical exam findings. We will review how to identify somatic, neurologic, and visceral causes of CPP.

CE/CME and Accreditation

This activity is provided by Global Education Group.

Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of frontline clinicians: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists involved in managing acute and chronic pain.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

Whether you're in a hospital or office-based practice, chronic pain patients are everywhere—and YOU are absorbing the burden of their care.

A just released report by the National Institutes of Health outlines positive steps that practitioners can take in response to the burgeoning problem of prescription medication abuse and to provide more effective pain management care to their patients. Key among these is access to pain education, and by participating in a PAINWeek Premiere Conference, you'll improve your skills in medication risk evaluation and mitigation, in pain assessment and diagnosis, and in the delivery of individualized multimodal treatment.

The Premiere agenda is purposely constructed for the busy clinician, delivering a full day of relevant, practical information, together with the opportunity for interaction and exchange with faculty and fellow attendees.

Pain Management for the Main Street Practitioner has been created to streamline the clutter of information on assessment, evolving guidelines, risk management, and changing reimbursement scenarios. Join us for a day of clinical and practice management CE/CME designed expressly for frontline clinicians. Participants can receive 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ as they expand their capabilities in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of chronic pain conditions.
